In general, our faith can be very external, as in the well-known case of the burglar who cries out to HaShem for success in his burglary (ברכות סג,א). Though he believes in G-d it doesn’t stop him from stealing. The Matza eaten on the first Seder night is called “The Food of Faith” michla d’meheimnua because it causes our natural emumna to be internalized and strengthened.
