Once, a group of chassidim of Rabbi DovBer of Lubavitch, the Mittler Rebbe, were sitting at a Chassidic gathering.
Suddenly, Reb Michael the Melamed burst into uncontrollable tears. He beat his chest and head and said to himself: “Master of the Universe! Have mercy on me, so that I can say the words, “Enlighten our eyes with your Torah, cause our hearts to cleave to your commandments, and unify our hearts to love and fear Your name,” with the same energy and intent that Reb Shlomo the philanthropist has when he says the words, “wealth and honor come from You.”
Reb Michael did not intend to belittle Reb Shlomo, he truly meant his words toward himself. He was not satisfied with the manner in which he served G-d. Reb Michael sincerely felt that he did not desire that G-d should “enlighten our eyes with your Torah” in the same manner that Reb Shlomo felt the words, “wealth and honor come from you.”
Nevertheless, these words made a deep impression on Reb Shlomo, who was as well sitting at the gathering. As a result, Reb Shlomo immediately set out to Lubavitch. He had a private audience with the Rebbe and from then on was a transformed individual.
The clear truth and pain of Reb Michael caused a transformation in the hardened heart of Reb Shlomo.
When chassidim sit together at a Chassidic gathering, they can literally enliven souls.
