The third Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch once said:
“Every Jew must ‘pay his debt’ to G-d with the fulfillment of the mitzvos that He commanded. However, an individual who loves G-d, is not satisfied with merely fulfilling his debts. Instead, he devises innovative ways to come close to G-d.
To what can this be compared to?
To a father that has an exceptional love for his child. Not only does he give him the sustenance that he needs to fulfill his parental duty, but he constantly asks him: ‘would you like to eat this dish or a different dish.’”
