The holy rabbi, Reb Moshe, the son of the first Rebbe of the Chabad dynasty, would not eat meat—even on Shabbos.
He was once asked concerning the rationale behind his behavior, being that it is considered a mitzvah to eat delicious meat on the Shabbos.
He responded:
“One is not obligated to consume meat. In general, concerning the commandments that are dependent on food and drink, nothing will happen if one isn’t so exact in their fulfillment…”
