The fourth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Shmuel of Lubavitch once told his son, the fifth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Sholom DovBer, the following:
The Alter Rebbe sacrificed his holy soul and invested his tremendous energies so that the congregation of Chassidim should literally be like one family. He wished that each member of the chassidic family should enquire about the livelihood of his fellow and that every action in helping one’s fellow should be done with such a love and affection, that they should literally feel like they are of one family.
