We Need Effort

Once, a chossid brought his grandchild before the third Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch and requested the following blessing:

“Rebbe! Please bless my grandchild with a good memory. He should remember all that he saw and heard in my home, all that he sees and hears now and all that will see by the Rebbe and his chassidim—then automatically he will be G-d-fearing.”

The Rebbe replied:

“It’s been already over fifty years that my grandfather (the Alter Rebbe), my father in-law (the Mittler Rebbe), and myself, have been putting in the utmost effort so that chassidim should fear Heaven through work and not be G-d-fearing without any effort whatsoever.”
