Reb Yale Kahn, the chief recorder of the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s thoughts, once repeated a story that exemplifies the Rebbe’s memory and his intimate knowledge of the works of Reb Tzadok of Lublin.
“Once,” said Reb Yale, “the Rebbe added a quote of a few lines from the work ‘Resisei Layla’ from Reb Tzadok of Lublin, to one of the Rebbe’s own essays, during his edits. The Rebbe requested, that because he had written the quote from memory, we should check to make sure that the quote was indeed correct. When we did check the quote against the actual book, we saw that besides for a word or two, the Rebbe had transcribed the quote perfectly. This quote is printed in Likutei Sichos, Vol. 5 Pg. 86.”
