The chossid, Rabbi Eliyahu Yosef Rivlin, was one of the great chassidim of the third Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch. It was even said about him that he possessed Ruach HaKodesh (Divine Inspiration).
Once, while he was in the synagogue, he went over to a young man enveloped in a tallis, who seemed to be meditating on deep Chassidic concepts. He lifted the man’s tallis, looked intently at him and exclaimed, “Pheh, pheh,” as if he was disgusted by something.
Those present could not understand what had occurred, and they asked the young man for an explanation. The fellow responded:
“Before I became a chossid, I studied many works of philosophy. Just now, as I was contemplating a deep Chassidic concept, I momentarily considered that the statement brought in Chassidus is untrue. Rabbi Eliyahu Yosef immediately sensed this sordid thought and was disgusted by it. From now on I commit myself never to think such things.”
