The Previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, once described a scene from a train station to describe the nightly spiritual journey of the soul:[1]
“At night, when the train station is dark and fairly empty, the porters scurry around, guiding the passengers to their respective trains—this train goes to such and such a place, and this train to such and such a place.
The Zohar (Vol. 1, 38a) says, that this physical world is a reflection of the supernal, spiritual world.
When the souls ascend as they go to sleep, there are angles that stand about. The Angel Michael guides each soul to its respective chamber.
To an individual who had told his friend that day, “Let’s gather a few rubles together for so-and-so’s benefit,” and they indeed did so, the angels match those souls together and send them to the supernal Chamber of Charity.
Likewise, someone who had learned Torah that day – he is sent to the supernal Chamber of Torah.”
Depending on our actions during the day, it affects our souls at night. This, in turn, creates a cycle in which our next day is positively affected as well. We must be sure to be careful with our actions and create only positive results from our deeds.
