To Educate and Be Educated

Once, the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak, said concerning one who should educate others in Chassidic practices:[1]

It is important to keep in mind that though a student is successful in his studies, he needs much apprenticeship and experience before he himself can in turn be an educator and a mentor.

This is akin to the aphorism of chassidim of old:

“An old chassid is a wiser than a young man who has both intellectual prowess in Chassidus and serves G-d at length in prayer.”
