Once, the 3rd Chabad Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch, recited the Chassidic discourse so quietly that there were many individuals that were unable to hear.[1]
At this event were many individuals who had traveled great lengths to reach Lubavitch and were particularly disappointed that after their arduous journey they hadn’t managed to be inspired by a Chassidic discourse.
To comfort them, Rabbi Hillel of Paritch quoted to them the phrase that we recite in the Passover Hagada: “Were we brought close to Mt. Sinai, but the Torah had not been given to us—it would have been enough.”
This story perhaps particularly apropos in our time. While we are surely longing to hear Chassidus from our Rebbe, we should know that being in his presence has a deep effect on our spiritual development.
