Assistance and Salvation

The verse (Tehillim, 37:33) states: “The Lord shall not leave him in his hands, and He shall not condemn him when he is judged.”

Reb Mendel of Kotzk explained the significance of this as follows:[1]

Concerning the battle that an individual has with his Evil Inclination, the Talmud (Sukka 52a) states: “The Evil Inclination of a man grows in strength each and seeks to kill him… and were it not that the Holy One, blessed be He, is his help, he would not be able to withstand it.”

The implication of G-d “helping” man is that if man does what he can to fight his Evil Inclination, then G-d will assist him.

However, there are periods in a person’s life where he is mentally depressed and does not have the stamina to fight his Evil Inclination.

During such a situation, man is judged to see if he is worthy that G-d should save him from his Evil Inclination.

G-d checks to see if the individual had battled his Evil Inclination at least one time with self-sacrifice—and if he did, the Almighty will save him from his Evil Inclination, even without man’s assistance.
