When the Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, was released from prison, he visited the famous sage, Rabbi Yehoshua Ceitlin of Shklov[1].
Reb Yehoshua enquired of the Alter Rebbe: “What is the situation amongst Chassidim concerning Torah study?”
The Alter Rebbe replied that the married chassidim have appointments in which they study Torah.
Reb Yehoshua continued to ask: “We as well study Torah, what then is novel in the Chassidic path?”
The Alter Rebbe answered as follows:
“The novelty is that amongst non-Chassidim, the appointment is in time, however, the Chassidic path demands that the appointment be not merely in time, but in one’s soul.”
